The Monsters of Terastae defy the virtues of the world and are trapped in a cycle of death and rebirth. Aethermancers are individuals with the ability to bond with these monsters, helping them achieve Worthiness to escape this cycle.

In Aethermancer, the majority of monsters draw inspiration from various cultures, folklores, and other works of fiction, with some having significant alterations to suit the game's fantasy setting. It's important to note that these monsters may not necessarily be accurate representations of their respective origins.

Obtaining Monsters

When starting a new run, the player is prompted to choose a starting monster from a pool of their Soulbonded monsters. The player also begins with random mementos of their Known monsters. These mementos can be used to rebirth monsters at Monster Shrines and are consumed upon use. At least four starting mementos are given, but this number can be increased by purchasing upgrades from Gustavo in Pilgrim's Rest.

The player can only have up to three monsters at their disposal, and only one monster of each species is obtainable at a time. When a monster dies in battle, it is removed from the party. The player can revive it if they manage to find the dead monster's memento; otherwise, they would need to revive a different monster to fill their team. Currently, there is no way to replace an existing monster in the party without it dying first.

Once a run has ended, all monsters are removed from the party. Monsters revert back to level 1 and loses any skills and bonuses they acquired during the run. However, any Worthiness they accumulated persists for future runs, providing perks for the monster and Aether Crystals upon each level up.

Known Monsters & Soulbonding

A monster becomes Known whenever its memento is collected during a run, either from loot drops or by purchasing it from the Merchant. Once a monster is Known, its memento may appear among the random starting mementos. The player can also establish a Soulbond with it by talking to Lily in Pilgrim's Rest for a cost, allowing it to be used as the starting monster in any future run. The player is already Soulbonded with Cherufe and Jotunn, while Mandragora, Ooze, Orthrus, Tatzelwurm, and Wolpertinger are already Known.
